What to Find on a Puerto Calero Villa Holiday

The dream to build a luxury resort came true for Jose Calero in 1983. The oasis of tranquility took 4 years to complete making it one of Europes exquisite marinas. Although there are no beaches, it has attracted the construction of 4 and 5 star hotels as well as some beautiful villas which are available for holiday rental. Originally it had the capacity to moore 220 berths but due to its success the capacity was doubled to 450 berths. Later in 2006 a new section was introduced for superyachts.
Despite being one of the main departure points on the island for sailing, fishing excursions its also has other amenities including a sports centre designed for all types of atheletes whether you are young or older, an amateur or high performance, theres a gym, swimming pool, paddle tennis, football, basketball and even a special area for children. The 2 hotels in the resort also have thalasso spas which are open to the public and offer a range of varied treatments. Theres bike hire and car hire if you want to see a bit more of the island or take a trip to the Puerto del Carmen golf course which is a 15 minute drive. Another 15 minute drive inland will take you to Lanzarote Caballo which is an excursion centre for horse riding.
There are a number of options for eating out in the resort with the restaurants all boasting front line views of the marina. Its easy to stroll along the promenade and take a look at varied menus on offer. There might be a smaller selection than the larger resorts but it is easy to find something to suit your apetite. Steaks, burgers, fish, traditional canarian food, Indian, Itallion and even your traditional sunday roast can be found along with a british style menu in one of the bars. Of course you can stop in the restaurants during the day for a drink or a coffee and watch the world go by.
The nightlife is centred around either eating out or chill out bars with soft music and comfortable sofas. If you are looking for something a little more lively you can easily take a taxi to Puerto del Carmen which has an abundance of entertainment bars.
Its a good base to explore the island either by car or organised excursion. The southern attractions are not far and include Timanfaya National Park, El Golfo and Los Hervideros. Even if you are not planning on going too far, there are some lovely clifftop walks, north to Puerto del Carmen and south will take you to the little fishing village of Playa Quemada which is a good place to try some traditional food in one of the seafront restaurants.
Marina excursions include Catlanza which is a trip on a catamaran to the Papagayo beaches in Playa Blanca, Mizu sea fishing, Puerto Calero sailing and the Submarine safari
There is a small shopping mall with upmarket designer shops offering all of the top labels, a couple of souvernir shops, perfume and duty free and a supermarket. A market selling all types of craft products takes place every Tuesday and Friday morning.
