The famous Romeria de Los Dolores will take place this Saturday 14th September in Lanzarote. This special day is a traditional celebration in honour of the Virgin de los Dolores who is the patron saint of the island.
Thousands of islanders will make the pilgrimage from all over the island, setting off on foot and dressed in traditional costumes, they will walk many miles to the village of Mancha Blanca in Tinajo.
The festival originates from 1736 during Lanzarote’s largest volcanic eruption. The lava spread across the island but according to the villagers, it miraculously stopped before destroying fertile crops thanks to the Virgin de los Dolores. Since then, the virgin is also known as the Virgin de la Volcanes (Virgin of the Volcanos).
There will be many events taking place over the weekend including a big concert on Sunday evening by Manuel Carrasco, a famous Spanish singer.
