To help the battle against climate change, Lanzarote and The Canary Islands will ban single-use plastics from 2021. A press conference has been held during a presentation for the Strategy for the Plastic in the Canary Islands where one of the counselors announced the strategy
The plan is to promote a drastic decrease in plastic waste and eventually incorporate into the Canary Islands Law. The reduction of consumption and the responsible use of plastics will form part of a plan along with the separation during refuse collection and reuse of recyclable plastic waste. The legislation has been prepared to align with European guidelines. The initiative is financed by the ERDF (European regional Development Fund). The plan is a big step towards a sustainable plastic industry, where design and production fully respect the needs of reduction, reuse, and recycling. The action comes at a time where greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel dependence needs to be eliminated.
