The island of Lanzarote is full of interesting characters, everyone has a story to tell whether they are imigrants who have settled here or locals with a historic line back to the Guanches who were the original occupants of the island. One famous islander was Hilario who has had an area of Timanfaya named after him.
Hilario returned to the island after the war in the Philippines and lived in this area of Timanafaya as a hermit. The only company he had was his camel. The legend says that he planted a fig tree but it never gave fruit because the flower could not survive the extreme tempretures below the surface
Inside the restaurant of Timanfaya there is an artistic portrayal. On a sack textured canvas appear glazed camel bones and a fig as a tribute to this man
