Theres not many Canarians that will risk there luck for the New Year ahead and not eat the 12 grapes at midnight. A tradition thats lasted since 1885 amongst the vine growers and has spead worldwide. Its done in a variety of ways and the idea is to get them all down on the chime of each second. Not easy so the best way is to line them all up and make sure they are seedless. Its imperative that you start on the first chime and not before as this will bring bad luck and you must finish on the last.
This tradition was adopted also in places with a broad cultural relation with Spain and Latin American countries, as well as Hispanic communities in the United States. Also the Philippines has adopted the tradition; they were part of the Spanish Empire.
