I spend most of the year wearing flip flops. I seriously wonder if I will ever be able to wear shoes again. Very popular footwear in Lanzarote and I was wondering the other day, where do they originate from and why are they called flip flops. Obviously had time on my hands.

Stands to reason that it is pretty primitive footwear so I wasn`t surprised to hear that the first evidence of them being worn was in 1,500 B.C and made out of leaves. Not sure they would last so long these days. The name comes from the sound that they make when you are walk in them with the rubber slapping on the soles of your feet but they have also been known as Flim Flams. The modern Flip flop as we know them were introduced by the  Japanese zōri, when soldiers from the United States brought them back after world war II. They became popular in the 1960’s
