Today is Three Kings Day and is a big day in Spain especially for all the children.
The day is also known as Epiphany or Día de los Reyes, it is a Christian holiday that celebrates the arrival of the Three Kings; Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar who followed the Star of Bethlehem to present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn Jesus. The day is a national holiday so most things will be closed.
In Spain ad therefore in Lanzarote the children receive gifts on Three Kings Day instead of or in addition to Christmas. This tradition reflects the gifts brought by the Kings. There will be Parades and Processions: featuring participants dressed as the Three Kings, who throw candy to children. Families will get together to celebrate the day and they will eat Many cultures celebrate with special food, such as the “Roscon de Reyes,” a sweet bread shaped like a crown, which often contains hidden figurines and represents the kings’ crowns.
