Lanzarote and Fuerteventura launched the first 132-kilowatt submarine power cable between the two islands. The power company, Red Eléctrica have run the cable from the Playa Blanca substation in Lanzarote, to the La Oliva substation in Fuerteventura. President of the Canaries, Ángel Victor Torres, has underlined the importance of this infrastructure between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura saying “It will strengthen the Canarian electricity system, and enable greater penetration of clean energy”.
Thanks to this interconnection, it will be possible to maximize the evacuation of renewable energy in safe conditions for the system and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions on both islands.
Red Eléctrica has invested 36 million euros in the project, using the latest techniques in terms of environmental protection and integration into the environment. The cable is 14.5 km long and reaches a depth of 80 metres.
