Arrecife will have 12,000 poinsettias on the Christmas season spread throughout the various neighbourhoods of the city, mainly adorning parks, roundabouts and shopping areas. The company CESPA Ferrovial, the concessionaire of the parks and gardens service, contributes 8,000 units, while the remaining 4,000 flowers have been purchased with resources from the City Council. The shape of the poinsettia flower and leaves are sometimes thought as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem which led the Wise Men to Jesus. The red coloured leaves symbolize the blood of Christ. The white leaves represent his purity. They grow pretty well with the Lanzarote climate which makes them ideal to decorate outside areas
