La Geria is the area of Lanzarote where the majority of the grapes are grown and the local wine is produced.
The great eruption of 1730-1736 covered one third of the island in black volcanic ash. This became beneficiary in the growing of grapes as the volcanic ash or picon, preserves soil moisture. Small, semi circular stone walls (zocos) are built around the vines and protect them from the prevailing winds. The predominant grape variety is Malvasia although the island also produces Muscatel, white and black Listen, Diego and Burra White Negramoll.
There are many bodegas on the island from small family run places where small signs outside advertise local wine to 18 larger wine bodegas that bottle and produce wine for export.
Namely:- El Grifo, Guiguan, Martinon, Stratvs, La Geria, Los Bermejos, La Florida, Bodegas Rubicon. Vega de Yuco, Tierra de Volcanes, Vulcano de Lanzarote and Los Perdomos.
