Tradition at Christmas time in Lanzarote sees villages creating nativity scenes known as a Belen which intererates to the word Bethlehem. One of the most recognised is the nativity scene created in the village of Yaiza. Locals from other villages like to visit this particular one as it is a display of imaculate detail incorporating scenes from different areas of the island. It was first displayed in 1970 by its creator Tito Viera and ever since has become regular feature of the villages Christmas display. The miniture model of the island will be ready early December and will remain in place until the 12 days of Christmas are over.
