The facinating wind machines that you see on quite a few of the roundabouts in Lanzarote, designed by Cesar Manrique. were sent into turmoil on Tuesday. Strong gusts caused a peice to break off of the mobile in Arrieta known as Veleta. Over the past few days, the wind has blown continuously and strongly on the island. On Tuesday, Lanzarote Airport recorded gusts of up to 67 kilometers per hour, according to Aemet data. The peice has already removed the affected piece for repair and to ensure the safety of the area. This particular sculpture was the first of the wind toys to be built on the island, and the only one that Manrique saw constructed before his death in 1991. It was only replaced in July last year after €50,000 had been invested, in checking and correcting the counterweights of the cones and the wear on the bearings, as well as rust in the lower structure of the support. The rods of the structure, which were initially the axles of a truck that had been left in a landfill, were also replaced by stainless steel.
