In some places today is Shrove Tuesday and Pancake Day in others it is Mardi Gras. Here in Lanzarote it is Carnival Tuesday (Martes Carnaval). It is a local bank holiday and the schools are closed.
Last night many Lanzaroteños were out in fancy dress celebrating in Arrecife.
Today at 17.30 in Arrecife there are carnival celebrations for the younger members of the family.
Tomorrow is the traditional Burial of the Sardine (Entierro de la Sardina) which signifies the final day of Carnival in Arrecife. You will see locals dressed in black parading the streets.
Next weekend a lot of this is repeated when the celebrations move to Puerto del Carmen.
Saturday is the big day when the parade along the Avenida de las Playas starts around 17.00. Fancy Dress is a must and the festivities continue until the early hours of the following morning.
