The Poinsettia is a plant we associate with Christmas time, It originates from Mexico and Central America and discovered by Europeans in 1834. The plants became popular at Christmas in the 16th century. the leaves are said to resemble the star of Bethlehem and the red flower, the blood of Christ. At this time of year these plants can be found all over Lanzarote, decorating roundabouts and public gardens. In Teguise they are replacing more than 2000 which have been stolen from the public areas in the recent weeks in the hope that they will last until after the holidays.
