The area of Matagorda in Lanzarote was developed in the 1990’s to cater to the ever growing numbers of tourism in Puerto del Carmen and the popular demand. It is now home to a number of hotels and villas and a long 6 kilometre stretch of sandy beach and seafront promenade.
Many do not know that Matagorda was once an area completely covered by Salt Mines. On this photo you can see how the area has completely changed over the last 30 years. In the centre of Matagorda, as it is today, part of the original salt mines have been conserved together with an original mill.
