Today is 3 kings day in Lanzarote. Its the Spanish Christmas day celebrated by the 3 kings arriving on camels to give out presents to the children. Every village has their own procession and ceremony where the kings arrive throwing sweets to the children. Its the equivalent of taking the kids to see Father Christmas. This is a popular tradition although many parents now do give their gifts on Christmas day delivered by Santa as the children don’t have a lot of time to enjoy them before returning to school. The kings do not leave their surprises in stockings like Father Christmas, the tradition is to leave a shoe. Today will mark the end of Christmas being 12th night but there is no rush to take down the decorations as in the UK and no superstition to leave them up causing bad luck.
