One of the advantages of living in Lanzarote are the clear night skies. Since my arrival some 20 years ago I have seen countless falling stars. If only all of my wishes had come true! We are in a perfect position to map the sky and see the constellations clearly. In fact, the Canarian island of La Palma has observatories on its highest peaks that are responsible for some of the great findings in the world. With little light polution on the island you can always find a spot to observe.

There are 2 of my favourite places to do some star gazing. One is the beach of Famara on the west coast and the other Tabayesco on top of the mountain. After a while you know exactly where to find most of the stars as they travel around the sky throughout the year.

This month will be the best month of the year for seeing the planet Jupiter. The planet will be rising in the east and will be visible all night moving across the night sky. For those of you that prfer the morning Mars and Saturn will make an appearance around this time.

If you are lucky enough to be visiting the island this monthand would like know a little more of what you are looking at in the sky, there are plenty of phone apps that can point you in the right direction.

Early mornings you may even catch a glimpse of the International Space station!
