Generating electricity from the sun is the way forward with regards to the environment. This method known as  Photovoltaics is the method for using solar cells to convert energy by flow of electrons. Solar cells produce direct current electricity from sunlight which can be used to power equipment or to recharge a battery. An ambitious project is about to start in the village of Maneje with plans for a  photovoltaic plant to be built. It had was initially estimated for housing a 1.9 megawatt solar power plant to boost 30% of the water consumption on the island and incorporate a sports centre and an area for entertainment and shows covering 16,000 square meters.
At the moment the sports centre is just an idea of a more complete development. The project consists of recovering the old water basin of Maneje, which had been abandoned for decades, of more than 16,000 square meters, and completely covered by a cantilevered structure with more than 7,000 solar panels, which will guarantee 1.9 megawatts of power, enough to boost more than 30% of the water consumed on the island, providing savings not only for energy, but will also substantially reduce the electric bills paid by the Water Consortium.
