Lanzarote this week will be an international hub on how to tackle sustainable tourism in Los Jameos del Agua, on the 19th and 20th, thanks to the international conference Sustainability as a key competitiveness factor for the development of the tourism industry. It has the support of the Cabildo, with the sponsorship of Unesco, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Government of the Canary Islands and Secretary of State for Tourism.

This conference, considered of special importance for the tourism industry in its commitment to sustainability, will bring together authorities and leading international experts in responsible tourism from countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico and Spain. In addition, representatives of the Association of British Travel Agencies (ABTA) are expected; as well as private corporations linked to the sector, such as IBM, TUI, Tripadvisor or Iberia, among others.

According to the organizers of the event, „the meeting aims to show a set of decisive recommendations and set precise goals regarding the contribution of the Tourism Industry to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (ODS), following the guidelines of the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism ST + 20 adopted in 2015 in Vitoria-Gasteiz ‚. The main objective will also be to „promote and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and good practices among all tourism operators, aimed at promoting responsible tourism with diversity of people and sustainable development“
