Today is the last day of Carnival in Arrecife (capital if the island)

This is a funeral parade through the streets with the centerpoint being a large model of a sardine. It is symbolic burial of the past to allow society to be reborn and takes place on ash Wednesday.

As it is Carnival it’s not a somber occasion and there is a lot of humor involved. Its traditional to dress in black and mourn the sardine as it travels through the streets. Men often look for their wifes best black dress and are seen wearing a strange combination of ladies wear behind the sardine to its final resting place which is normaly Arrecife beach where it is set alight
