The caves and lava tubes in the Canary Islands provide special living conditions to unique specias of animals found in the world. The blind white albino crabs in Jameos are probably one of the most recognised but there are also a number of bats including one which is known as the Canary Long Eared Bat (Plecotus Teneriffae) The Canarian envirioment provides the perfect conditions for roosting for these mamals. First brought attention in 1907 and discovered by a British mamalogist Gerald Edwin Hamilton. He described them as simular tothe brown long eared bat but this new species had much larger wings. This bat is a protected species under Spanish law and international conventions.
