It is an attraction that appearded from nowhere, suddenly cars and tourists started to appear on the waste ground on the road from Tias to San Bartolome, Now, Las Grietas sees hundreds of visitors taking a walk around the cracks and rock formations. The council is now consiering prohibiting free access and scheduling guided tours in Las Grietas after a study. This area receives hundreds of visitors daily without any type of control or regulation, without signs, and without surveillance, its natural area of geological interest is subject to significant tourist pressure. Tías Town Council intends to regulate visits and make them guided. There are also concerns that the most visited ravine is being damaged, and due to the narrowness of some areas and the loose lapilli, people cling to the walls, causing them to deteriorate. The report also concludes that there are risks to people, such as the risk of natural landslides caused by boulders falling naturally into Las Grietas. There are also potential accidents due to carelessness, as many visitors wear inappropriate footwea. Added to this is the risk of road accidents due to the busy road to reach the site. Among the measures proposed by the study are restricting free access and establishing guided tours with small groups of no more than ten people. It also includes creating a municipal ordinance for the protection and use of the site.Furthermore, it proposes an adaptation project that includes cordoning off the busiest upper sections of Las Grietas and preventing the movement of people near the upper areas of the walls. The proposals also include placing road signs to indicate the location of the most suitable parking area, avoiding potential driver negligence. Likewise, it is proposed that the site guide should not focus solely on geology, as the area is associated with water collection systems from the island’s past, and archaeological studies are underway.
