Hard to imagine but wheat has been grown at the councils experimental farm in the village of Tahiche. The wheat was not planted to provide any sort of industry for consumption but as a supply to the locakl craftsmen that make hats and baskets. This is a commitment to the to the islands history continuing the traditions of hand made crafting. This is not the first time that wheat has been grown on the island. Lanzarote was once known as “the granary of the Canaries” for its production of wheat, barley, maize and rye. That ended when many of the fields were covered with lava following the eruptions of the 1730s. Surprisingly Gofio, a staple in Canarian cuisine, is often made from wheat, along with other grains like maize. It’s a versatile ingredient used in various preparations, from thick pastes to porridge. The different levels of toasting used to create gofio influence the flavor and color.
