The traditional hat from Lanzarote or «Sombrero» as it is called locally is known as a farmers hat. It typically has a high crown and a wide brim and black ribbon.
Often in the villages of Lanzarote women were identified between being married of single by the style of their hat. As it was common for women to carry weight on hats, the crown was often strengthened on the inside with a cardboard circle and was also lined with fabric to prevent rubbing on the skin. Two ribbons were sewn at the base to tie it under the chin, usually over a handkerchief. The hat was made to protect the face and head from the sun and strong heat.
