This Saturday, 20th May 2023, sees the Ironman triathlon return for the 31st time.

Ironman is a well known sporting event that takes place every May in Lanzarote and is one of 37 events that are included in the Ironman championships.
Each event has three phases; a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42.2km run. The Lanzarote Ironman is considered one of the toughest because of the variable terrain and weather.
The race starts at 7am on the main beach of Puerto del Carmen (PLaya Grande), towards the Fariones Hotel and there is usually a large gathering of people to see the swimmers off. The swim can last between 45 – 90 minutes.

After the swim, there is an immediate transition to the bikes for this section of the Ironman which is known to be one of the toughest. The route leaves Puerto del Carmen, up to Tias, towards El Golfo before the riders start their ascent towards Mirador del Rio in the north. This cycle section usually lasts between 5 – 8 and a half hours>

The final section of the Ironman is the run which consists of three laps around the seafront promenade of Puerto del Carmen.Although the terrain for this section is flat , the challenge is running 42.8km in the heat.
