The Department of Historical Heritage for the council of Lanzarote has initiated two new BIC protection orders which are awarded to places of cultural interest.They are to protect the El Diablo restaurant in the Timanfaya National Park and the house of César Manrique in Haría. Details of these orders were published on Monday in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands. The orders add to those published for Jameos del Agua and its auditorium, the Church of San Marcial and the historic complex that surrounds it and three buildings of Calle Real: the old Oriental hotel, El Mercadillo and the building that housed the Tamaragua store. The process has been ordered to recognize these spaces as an Asset of Cultural Interest and means that they will benefit from the same protection as other important cultural spaces of interest. From now only maintenance, rehabilitation or restoration works can be carried out that do nor affect the property. In the case of the El Diablo restaurant the report highlights that important architectural and artistic values cannot be modified or changed.
