More than 230 Olympic sailors, from 34 countries around the world hope to take advantage of the Lanzarote weather conditions and  infrastructures that the island has to offer. In the coming weeks athletes, who have chosen Lanzarote to prepare for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo, will arrive on the island. The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, has emphasized the importance of nautical tourism for the economy and image of the island, especially in the current times of uncertainty. «Although the tourism sector is suffering the serious consequences of the pandemic, sailors continue to opt for Lanzarote as a destination to train, valuing both the climate and the quality of the accommodation facilities that the island offers. A good example of this are the more than 80 villas that this group is currently occupying and contributing to the reactivation of this area so important for Lanzarote ”.

Within the time frame of the first edition of the Lanzarote Olympic Winter Regatta, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife and Marina Rubicón, the athletes are staying in Lanzarote in order to prepare for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The organization of the competition point out that, despite the tragedy that this health crisis undoubtedly entails, the island has still attracted all these athletes to the island, permitting the launch of this international championship for the first time. The athletes themselves point to the state-of-the-art infrastructures and the short distances between different parts of the island, as well as the weather conditions during winter and the safety of this destination, as the main reasons why they have chosen Lanzarote for the development of their exercise.
