The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, met last Tuesday with representatives of Ryanair in the Canary Islands to discuss possible closure of the bases that the company has in Tenerife and Gran Canaria before the announcement of a strike made by the staff working for the company. The intention of the meeting was to find out what plans Ryanair has for the Canary Island routes given the closure of these bases and the effect it will have for all the islands. The company has a high presence in all of the islands and are responsible for a high percentage of tourists from the UK, Ireland and Spain. This high profile meeting was attended by the Regional Executive, the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and also the presidents of Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, together with the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Yaiza Castilla. One of the reasons for the planned closure in September is due to the delay on the delivery of 30 Boeing 7378 Max planes which were grounded internationally at the beginning of the year due to safety issues. The company has experienced a quarterly fall in profits and are threatening to make job cuts at the end of September 2019 and in the New Year. They are reported to have an excess of 500 pilots and 400 cabin crew. The date for the strike has still not been set but is planned for the month of September. Strikes will take place this month in Faro airport in Portugal due to the closure of the Ryanair base
