Almost 800 days have passed since an agreement was signed promoting residence of La Mareta in Costa Teguise as a regular space for events and a place for well know personalities to stay. However, there is still no evidence that the idea has been a success.

The disapointment that the property has had no interest and has not been used was discussed last weekend by the Councilor for Tourism of Teguise on the basis that it is believed that it has enormous potential. In its hayday the villa had been used by Helmut Kohl, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vaclav Havel, José María Aznar or José Luis Rodríguez Shoemaker. Also accommodating on several occasions members of the Spanish royal family until the unfortunate death of the grandmother of King Felipe VI since which they have not returned

The residence of La Mareta was built by the order of King Hussein of Jordan. In 1989 the Asian monarch gave it to Juan Carlos I and later it became property of the State. The plot is almost 31,000 square meters and the main building was designed by Fernando Higueras. It has gardens, courts and a heliport. At the start of 2018 there is enough evidence showing that the building is now showing certain level of deterioration.

The agreement to use the place as a point for tourist promotion was signed on December 2, 2015 between the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism and National Heritage.
