There is no shortage of sculptures on Lanzarote. Adding to the artwork of  Cesar Manrique there has been a host of artists creating sculptures around the island. The newest has been unveiled in the village of San Bartolome and is titled El Tonelero, which is a barrel builder.

Dedicated to Felipe de León Rocío who at 93 years old continues to build barrels as he has done all of his life. Every day he goes to his work shop in San Bartolome which is close to where the sculpture has been placed. The fascinating story of his father who went to work in Cuba between 1917 to 1922 where he learnt the skill of cooperage which became his profession on returning to the island and passed down to his son. Felipe cannot believe that the sculpture has been dedicated to his work and is over the moon by the sculpture commissioned by the local council and designed by the Lanzarote artist Rigoberto Camacho.
