This week will see the fiestas of San Juan (midsummer). Its hard to believe that the longest day of the year is approaching. It seems like we only put the clocks forward a couple of weeks ago! As usual this event does not pass by without a fiesta or 2. On the night of 23rd bonfires will be lit all around the island to ward off pagan spirits. The solstice is celebrated with superstition and many people go down to the sea to bathe at midnight for good luck and if you jump over the bonfire 3 times you will be cleansed.
If you are on the island there are plenty of events around the island. The village of Haria being the most prominent as San Juan is the patron saint of the village.
